Teachers’ Resources : Ideas to bring the magic of The Feathers of Farwood into the classroom

The start of term is looming, and as parents are busily labelling books and buying new school shoes, teachers are planning their first lessons of the year. To make your classroom experience even more engaging, I’m excited to announce that my teaching notes for The Feathers of Farwood and The Gripps Curse (Book 1 in the trilogy) are now available!

Australian Curriculum Outcomes – why choose The Feathers of Farwood

The book aligns with the Australian Curriculum Outcomes for English, Science, and Media Arts. Themes woven throughout the story include:

  • Environment (this book was inspired by settings like The Glasshouse Mountains, Mount Coolum, and K’gari)
  • Friendship
  • Family
  • Overcoming Obstacles/Conflict

These outcomes provide a great springboard for rich classroom discussions and activities, particularly in understanding magical realism and building connections with local wildlife and Australian landscapes.

Queensland school author talks and workshops

I am now offering School Author Talks and Workshops (suited for grades 3 to 6). These visits are a great opportunity for students to learn more about the creative process and the fascinating world of writing and storytelling.

Topics Covered:

  • The creative writing process
  • Creating magical systems in stories and writing believable characters
  • Turning an idea into a book
  • Fascinating owl facts & local owl encounters on the Sunshine Coast
  • SEE MORE: OFFICIAL TEACHING NOTES FOR MY BOOK

These talks (in classroom or small group formats) offer an engaging opportunity for students to dive deeper into their creativity while connecting with themes from the book.
