School holidays are here – in Queensland, at least.
As a busy working parent, you usually fall into one of two groups: jumping for joy at the prospect of having the kids home for two weeks (I applaud those with the energy to pack up the tent and go camping) OR racking your brains for activities that preferably don’t involve slime (why-oh-why is it still a thing!) while trying to block out the repeated cries of “I’m bored!”.
One thing you can count on is your local library to have some great activities on offer, and many of them are often free (although registration is sometimes required).
Holiday fun at Sunshine Coast Libraries
Registrations for Sunshine Coast-based library programs open from today (24 June). You can find out more here. From scavenger hunts to LEGO-building, there are options for most younger age groups.
Last holidays, I even picked up a free holiday fun pack with puzzles and goodies. These are also available through online registrations, but I suggest getting in quick.
Ongoing programs – Storytime & building language skills
Most libraries also offer regular Storytime sessions throughout the year – not only on school holidays.
I remember taking my children when they were younger, where they can discover the magical world of books and reading while developing pre-literacy and language skills.
Again, check out your local library online or on social media for more info.
When in doubt, borrow!
I don’t know about you, but heading to the library as a kid and being able to choose from ALL those books (for free, no less!) and use your very own library card at the computer checkout was always a bit of an event.
This year, my children are taking part in the MS Readathon, so I encourage them to pick up new books and read if they’re having a moment of boredom.
Whether you’re sitting with your feet up by the campfire, or finding a moment of peace at home…Happy holidays! And happy reading!
